My old college friend, Holly, and I have not really communicated since we both got married and moved away from home. We did try to keep in touch for a while, but distance makes continued communications hard. When I got on Facebook, I eventually found Holly again and we became Facebook friends. It turns out that we are both living in the same general area of our alma mater again. We exchanged phone numbers, but neither one of us took a step forward to do anything with the other.
A little while ago, Holly invited all of her Facebook friends to go to a middle-school production of the Wizard of Oz that she has been working on. And it occurred to me that I lead a pretty boring life and have kind of been hiding from society for a very long time. This is not good for me and it is not a good example to set for my daughter. So I decided to go to Holly's middle-school production and I hoped to reconnect with my old friend. It would certainly be good to get out of the house with my daughter and do something different than usual on a Friday night. And so, last night, we were “Off to see the Wizard!”
The production was amazingly good for middle-schoolers! I was incredibly impressed. The auditorium was packed. And it was not a watered-down version of the story, either. It was a full-length show. At intermission, I looked around for Holly. But I did not see her anywhere. It was not until the show was completely over and people were emptying out of the room that I found my friend, with the help of my daughter. Unfortunately, Holly was walking up the stage stairs and out of the auditorium by the time I saw her. So I went home disappointed that I had not been able to connect with my friend.
When I got home, I left a message on Holly's Facebook wall to tell her what a good job she and the kids had done on the show. And this morning, Holly responded to my message! I happened to be online when she did. And we were able to connect. Now we have a coffee date this Thursday morning. I am so excited!
I will keep you all posted on what happens. (And I am totally going to get someone to take my picture with Holly at coffee.)
