Amusement

My daughter's boyfriend's birthday is in June. They have been dating since last summer and she is very excited (or at least she seems excited to her old mom) to give her first birthday gift to him. Now, I cannot say what it is because his birthday has not yet passed, but I can say that we went out looking for it yesterday. One of the places we looked was an antique shop.

It is very difficult to enter an antique shop and not look at everything there, especially when one is in the position of renovating and remodling an old house, as I am. As my daughter and I meandered through cubicle after cubicle of old things, my eye landed on something that I simply could not resist.

"Anne, stop," I commanded. She stopped walking and started looking at items on a nearby shelving unit.

"Stop moving and stand still," I instructed. Anne's hands dropped to her sides as she obediently stood motionless.

""Now say," My voice raised up to squeak, "Mmm mm."

Anne got a funny look on her face. She must have been thinking something along the lines of, "What could my crazy mother be telling me to do this for?"

She obeyed with twisted lips, "Mmm mm."

Choking back laughter, I immediately grabbed up an old oil can from a nearby shelf. I pretended to oil the corners of her mouth, like Dorothy did to the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. I could not hold my straight face. I burst into laughter as I "oiled" the second corner.

Exhaled breath, eye roll, shaking head, Anne turned and walked away from me. I put back the oil can and followed, still laughing. Ah, yes. My daughter may not find me funny, but I do amuse myself.
