I have been racking my mind over the last few weeks trying to figure out a way to increase interaction with my readers and increase my audience. A few days ago, I was chatting online with my Facebook friend, Dee. We decided that a GAME would be a good way to interact with readers. People like games. Right? But what kind of game should it be? It needs to be original, interactive and fun. We could not decide.
Last night, the game came to me in church. I really do not mean to think about random things while I am in church. I actually try to pay attention to the readings and the service. But, somehow, many of my best ideas come to me as I listen quietly to Scripture in my favorite pew. It was there that it occurred to me a trivia game based upon the entries in this blog might be just the ticket.
After church, I discussed my fledgling idea over dinner with Anne. It took a little time to work out the details, but I think we have it so that it will work quite nicely if I use my Author Fan Page on Facebook as the medium by which I communicate challenge questions with my readers.
I am very excited about the idea of this game! I already LOVE reader interaction, as it is. Knowing that my words are being read around the world keeps me actively watching my readership statistics throughout the day. I think I might just get giddy if some of my readers will also help me play.
(Imagine me getting pulled over by a police officer right after playing the challenge game. He gets out of his squad car the way that police officers do, to come up to my car with that intimidating police-officer walk. No idea what he might possibly want, my heart thumps loudly in my chest as I roll down my window.
"Ma'am, have you been drinking?"
"Well. . . I had some coffee with my granola bar this morning, officer. May I ask what is the problem?"
"Your driving seems a little. . . distracted. Please blow into this breathalizer."
"Of course, officer. But I am sober. I always get a little giddy right after interacting with my readers."
"Your readers? Giddy? You're not. . . Are you?" He stammers as he recognizes me from my picture, "Are you. . . Author Beth Durkee?"
I smile as I nod confirmation.
The officer pulls off his sunglasses to get a better look then exclaims, "Why, it is you! I was just playing your challenge game! The winning player beat me by only half a second! Can I have your autograph?" He hands me a tablet of paper.
Smiling broadly, I take the pad to sign it. Then I see that what I have been asked to autograph is my ticket!)
Alright, so I have a bit of an imagination. It helps to keep me amused. Perhaps it could help keep you amused, too? Please participate in my challenge game.
I made a new tab on this blog where I will post details of the game. Check it out tomorrow, after I have had a chance to post them. Also, please join Author Beth Durkee Fan Page on Facebook, if you intend to participate. I intend our first game to be this Wednesday at 9:00 am Central Time.
WARNING If readers do not wish to participate in this game, I will assume it is because my idea is no fun. I will most likely put on my thinking cap to imagine yet another way to interact at that point, and the tab (and, therefore, the game) will disappear. So if this challenge game sounds like it might be something you would enjoy, please participate.
